A BOLD Approach to Challenging Assumptions

Last week, I shared about the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI®).

I use a cultural assessment with my clients to help them begin discussing cultural competency, humility, and navigation.

During my assessment debrief, one of the questions I asked was about the last time you reflected on the mediums you consume.  The pauses in the conversation led me to think about unpacking this more in my blog for this week.

As a DEI strategist and executive coach, I'm constantly reminded of the power of challenging assumptions – especially when it comes to navigating the murky waters of the news cycle. It's no secret that staying informed can be daunting, particularly when faced with the onslaught of hard-hitting headlines and the struggle to discern fact from fiction.

But here's the thing: in our quest for truth and justice, it's essential to recognize that even the most reputable news outlets aren't immune to bias. That's why I'm urging you to take BOLD action by challenging your assumptions as you consume the news.

Let's start by acknowledging the elephant in the room: bias. Whether subtle undertones or outright misinformation, bias pervades our media landscape. From racial stereotypes to skewed narratives, our news sources often reflect – and perpetuate – the systemic inequalities that plague our society.

So, how can we combat this insidious force?

It begins with introspection. Take a moment to reflect on your news consumption habits.

Are you inadvertently reinforcing your biases by gravitating toward sources that align with your worldview?

Are you actively seeking diverse perspectives, or are you content to remain in your echo chamber?

We can foster a more inclusive and equitable society by challenging our assumptions and expanding our news media diet.

Start by diversifying your sources – seek out voices that challenge your preconceived notions and expose you to new perspectives. Engage in critical analysis – question the motives behind the headlines and interrogate the narratives that shape our understanding of the world.

And above all, remember that change begins with you. By taking a proactive stance against bias and misinformation, you're not just consuming the news – you're shaping it.

I invite you to join me in this journey of discovery. Let's challenge our assumptions and confront our biases.
